Welcome to the
Scarlet Oak Tavern!
We
are thrilled to announce that Boston Magazine has awarded us
with a Best of Boston award for 2008! We have been crowned “Best
Restaurant, Comfort Food” in the South of Boston group.
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street
in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored
and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine,
led by Executive Chef Brian Sway, centers around great steaks,
although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American
comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating
service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be
more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.
Menus and Wine List
Our chefs are committed to using local, fresh
ingredients to create seasonally appropriate dishes. As such,
our menu items change frequently, and we cannot guarantee all
dishes are available at all times.
Bios
Josh Webber
- Principal Owner
In
2004, Josh started the award-winning Gibbet
Hill Grill in Groton, MA on a cattle farm owned by his
family. Starting with a pair of run down, 100 year-old barns,
he brought in the Niemitz Design Group to transform the space
into a stylish-yet-comfortable steakhouse that also features
upscale comfort food. Since opening, the Grill has been a culinary
mainstay of the area, regularly attracting diners for both special
occasions as well as relaxed nights out. Before entering the
restaurant world, Josh worked for five years in the mergers
and acquisitions group at Morgan Stanley. He received his undergraduate
degree in math and economics at Kenyon College, and his MBA
from the Darden School at UVA. He and his wife Beth have twin
daughters, Sarah and Lily, born in November of 2003, and a son
Zack born in May 2005.
Jed Webber -
Principal Owner
In 2004, Jed started the award-winning Gibbet
Hill Grill in Groton, MA on a cattle farm owned by
his family. Starting with a pair of run down, 100 year-old
barns, he brought in the Niemitz Design Group to transform
the space into a stylish-yet-comfortable steakhouse that also
features upscale comfort food. Since opening, the Grill has
been a culinary mainstay of the area, regularly attracting
diners for both special occasions as well as relaxed nights
out. Before embarking on his restaurant career, Jed had a
variety of management experience at Booz Allen & Hamilton
and other consulting firms in New York City. He also has an
MBA from the Darden School, which included an internship with
PlumpJack Restaurant Group in San Francisco. Jed attended
Middlebury College, graduating with a double major in Economics
and Molecular Biology. He and his wife Asia have a daughter
Nina who, in a race to the finish, was born 19 days before
her cousins Sarah and Lily. In 2005, their son Gage was born,
making a total of five kids aged three and under between Josh
and Jed. Needless to say, the holidays are a bit hectic these
days for the Webber family.
Asia Webber
- Minority Owner
Asia
brings an often-needed dose of femininity to decisions at The
Scarlet Oak Tavern (what's wrong with ten TVs?!?), where she
is in charge of design coordination, procurement, and coming
up with the occasional new dessert idea. Her wonderful combination
of intelligence, beauty and charm make her damn near the perfect
woman. She is also married to Jed (who wrote the bios for this
website).
K.C. O'Hara -
Culinary Director
K.C.
has been involved in the Boston restaurant scene for nearly
20 years. He's worked in the kitchen of such esteemed restaurants
as Sonsie, The East Coast Grill, Seasons, and The Harvard Faculty
Club, all in addition to working as a chef consultant, a recipe
developer for cookbooks, and a guest chef at the Masters Golf
Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. K.C.'s talent for finding ways
to weave innovative flavors into classic American dishes brought
him great renown at the Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton, and he
is thrilled to bring that same passion to the South Shore. KC
graduated from Johnson and Wales University. He and his wife
Frances have 3 children: Colin, Brogan and Grace.
Tom Totman -
Managing Partner
Tom
has been managing restaurants since 1989 in both Boston and
San Francisco at such places as Harvard Square's Border Café,
Bertucci's, Legal Seafoods and, most recently, The Gibbet Hill
Grill in Groton. Tom's dedication to customer service is legendary,
which is why we were so lucky to drag him away from the big
city. Tom now lives in Holliston with his wife and children,
Madeline and Julian.
John Gallagher
- General Manager
John
has been working in the hospitality business for over 20 years.
He got his start working in hotel management at Prime Hospitality
in his native New Jersey, making his way through the ranks until
he became a GM. He started in restaurant management in 1997,
eventually working his way to the General Manager position at
McCormick & Schmick’s, first in Manhattan, then most recently
at the Boston Park Plaza location. He lives in Framingham with
his wife Michelle and two amazing kids Ryan, 8, and Erin, 6.
Brian Sway -
Executive Chef
Brian
comes to us most recently from Blue Ribbon Barbecue in Newton,
where as executive chef, he set the standard for barbecue in
the greater Boston area. So much so that we went out and bought
a smoker ourselves right after we hired him. Prior to Blue Ribbon,
Brian and Culinary Director K.C. O'Hara worked together on a
number of occasions, most recently at the Harvard Faculty Club.
Brian is a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Providence,
RI.

"...with a full renovation that renders the old house
much more inviting, a vast and tempting menu, stellar service,
and - best of all - really good food, the Scarlet Oak Tavern
just might be the first place since Country Fare (1937 to 1981)
to occupy the building for the long haul." ~ Boston

"As soon as we pulled into the packed parking lot at the
Scarlet Oak Tavern last week, we could tell it was a happening

The restaurant is sophisticated enough that people will
think of coming here for a special occasion such as an anniversary
or birthday, but also comfortable enough to watch a Red Sox
game and grab a burger and a beer. ~ The

Private Dining
The Upstairs
One flight up from the main dining room and tavern is a
55-person room that was completely renovated in 2007 to create
a ten-foot tray ceiling with antique exposed wooden beams and
a working fireplace. There is a private bar and lounge area
outside the room that can be used as a gathering area before
events. In addition, there are two private rooms upstairs with
a single table in each room. One of them can accommodate up
to eight people, the other up to twelve.
The Wine Room
The Wine Room is a 14-person private room that is separated
from the main dining room by the Tavern's hand-crafted wine
cabinets. Its unique semi-open design creates the perfect amount
of privacy without losing the energy from the main dining room.
